AL-ANON: The Oxygen Mask Goes on You First!

Most of us have traveled enough on airplanes to be able to recite the safety instructions. You know " should the airplane cabin lose pressure". The most important part of those instructions are “if you are traveling with a child or someone who needs extra help, please put the oxygen mask on yourself first so you CAN BETTER ASSIST them”. Many times, when loved ones are dealing with an active addict they are the ones who are going to any lengths to correct/stop the addiction. This is exhausting and mentally taxing and leaves families at their wits end when they need to be at their best. Believe it or not, it is possible to be at your best during this time…if you take care of yourself: physically, mentally and spiritually. 12-step support groups provide great experience, strength and hope for the recovering addict.

Families coping with this disease are no different and can best find answers through others who sat in their exact shoes by attending Al-Anon meetings. As much as families think their problems are unique, they are not. In fact, most quickly discover they have more in common with members of this group than people they have known their whole lives. In recovery, we always maintain that no one has to do this alone. Al-Anon provides a great outlet of support and understanding that combined with wellness will put you at your best in supporting your loved one in recovery.
