When most people find out they have a life threatening disease the first reaction is almost always “we are going to fight this thing and beat it”. This spirit comes so natural to us and makes all the sense in the world except when it comes to the disease of addiction and co-occurring disorders. When we are in the midst of active addiction it’s not reasonable to suggest to “stop it and fight back”. To fight our disease we have to surrender to it to fully understand how unmanageable our lives have become (not to mention the immediate threat of accidental overdose).

Recovery is a stage process and time takes time. We need to get safely detoxed and then begin a journey of a new way of thinking with a new set of tools. The 12-steps are here to guide us along with a sponsor and a support group of others just like us. Even when we feel better in early recovery and get anxious to show strength it is always best to surrender to our disease and show acceptance. Let’s face it…if we were able to fight our disease and beat it, then we wouldn’t have hit bottom. Addiction has most of us over matched. Surrender, re-group and find new tools to fight is the winning strategy.
