Let Go of Being a Fixer

Remember growing up and something was broken? Dad took out his toolbox, examined the problem and shortly thereafter, all was right again and everyone went about their business. In the awful web of addiction, there is a world of difference between diagnosing a problem, picking up a screwdriver and replacing the right parts and “fixing” our loved one.
It took my dad “the fixer” years to learn that no matter what he tried and how much “control” he thought he had there is no “fixing” another person until they want to fix themselves, especially one in active addiction.

The worst thing that can happen to fixers is they dive in the shallow end head first and swim away like a champion. The God complex comes into play, and all it does is hurt us when real problems confront us.
It is important that we ALL understand our own limits and boundaries. Sometimes, the best thing a “fixer” can be is a supporter, who is taking care of themself. It’s all very simple, but can be incredibly hard!
