Over the past several years, countless studies have been conducted and millions of dollars invested in establishing evidence-based addiction treatment approaches. These are the therapies that are most effective for treating addiction. These therapies are referred to as "evidence-based treatment" because they are supported by evidence from research studies.
Evidence-based treatments is the best way of ensuring that your time and money is well spent on an approach that has been proven to be effective. While every person is different, and what works for one will not necessarily work for another, you are much safer trying one of the treatments below than an unsubstantiated treatment, or one that is based in approaches such as confrontation or humiliation of the person with the addiction. Here is what the data shows.
Suboxone Maintenance
While controversial, Suboxone Maintenance has shown to be an effective medical tool for some patients to fight addiction. It can save lives from overdose due to unknown additives in the nebulous “powder” the patient is using (i.e. fentanyl), as well as the potency of street heroin. Suboxone works in combination by curbing cravings and withdrawals. It also contains Naltrexone, which is an opiate antagonist. Arresting these conditions helps addicts be more open; allowing them to truly focus on therapeutic programs.

While Suboxone is certainly not a “cure” for addiction and is not appropriate for all patients, it is producing positive outcomes as high as 60%. The extent to which any doctor can help a patient with substance use disorders is limited by the medications which are currently approved by the FDA for this use. Buprenorphine (Suboxone), Naltrexone and Vivitrol products are what physicians must work with in saving lives.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) approach, addictive behaviors, such as drinking, drug use, problem gambling, compulsive shopping, video game addiction, food addiction, and other types of harmful excessive behavior, are the result of inaccurate thoughts and subsequent negative feelings. By changing your thinking patterns, through CBT, you can change the way you both feel and behave. CBT has an excellent track record, with numerous studies demonstrating its effectiveness in treating depression, anxiety and other conditions, including addiction.
