Coming into addiction doesn’t happen overnight. It can happen in a matter of months, or build for a few years, but once the wheels come off, there is no turning back until you have decided to stop and get help. There are millions of people in recovery, but there is also at least the same amount in active addiction. They are living amongst us as parents, children, professionals and many we look up to. Drug and alcohol addiction does not discriminate. It will tear the individual apart and destroy all the relationships he or she has in their life. This is certain! Not all the signs are easy, but here is what you need to pay attention to if you’re concerned about yourself or a loved one, and think they may have a problem
Are you an addict? Here are six signs you need help
Hide and Conceal
You conceal how much and how often you use. Addicts hide their use as much as possible so that they can continue to use without loved ones interfering.
Consequences
You experience negative consequences to your drug/alcohol use. More than a once-a-year hangover, your relationships, work, health, or finances are being negatively impacted by your substance abuse.
Tolerance is Higher
You use more than you once did. This is called tolerance – it takes more and more of a drug to get the same effect you once did.
Withdrawal
You use drugs to control withdrawal symptoms. When you’re not using, you don’t feel well and may experience a variety of symptoms. To avoid these symptoms, you stay high most of the time.
Stop Enjoying Life
You’ve stopped activities you once enjoyed. Drug or alcohol abuse takes our lives from us. You stop doing the things you once found pleasure in.
Keeping Going Regardless of Consequences
You keep using even though you see your life deteriorating. Addicts see the problems substances are causing in their lives but go on using anyway.
